“Westech Shake and Fire System” is an MDI “shake and fire” system specified, designed and manufactured by Westech Scientific Instruments Ltd. The Westech Shake and Fire System automatically delivers consistent and controllable MDI actuations and provides a programmable shaking and firing function that will connect the inhaler with a variety of measurement or other devices including DUSA, ACI, W7/NGI and the WWSC (Waste Shot Collector)

Westech’s Shake and Fire System is supplied with a range of accessories which expand the capability of the system and enable further stages of automation including flow generation, measurement and control, automated leak test, actuation force measurement and temperature and humidity recording. The system is designed to enable ease of validation of the operating parameters by external, reference-calibrated instruments.

Westech’s Shake and Fire System operates from an integral colour touch screen controller built into the main panel of the instrument raised up away from the bench top to avoid any potential contamination. The system does not require an external computer to function and in that sense, is stand-alone. It can be interfaced with external systems – computers, networks or LIMS if required through the Ethernet connection.

Test instruments – ACI, W7/NGI, DUSA and WaSC – are mounted on dedicated, easily interchangeable platforms that are installed on the sliding bed (slide) of the system prior to use giving maximum flexibility and ease of operation. These platforms are used to present the collection device to the inhaler in an extremely repeatable manner with the inhaler remaining fixed in position during the firing cycle which is essential to achieve the minimum variability of measurements. The use of custom-made mouthpiece adaptors ensures that the inhaler is firmly fixed in the ideal position in the induction port (ACI and W7/NGI) or the entrance to the device (DUSA and WaSC). The devices themselves are “locked” into fixed positions on the platforms providing further integrity of measurement.

The system includes automatic height positioning for each of the specific test instruments and adjustment and alignment is fixed on the platform to ensure accurate positioning of the inhaler in the mouthpiece adaptor.

Westech’s Shake and Fire System automates a pre-programmed sequence of events – flow control, leak test, shake cycle, fire cycle, repeat cycles, device etc. – defined by the user in a METHOD. The data from running each METHOD on an inhaler is stored and downloaded to a USB storage device or an external computer along with the inhaler ID.
